From: Howard Kruger
Friends of Winona Parks (FOWP) would like to thank the Winona Post for their coverage of the ash tree issue in Winona’s city parks. I would also like to thank Greg Olson, Kent Grover, Chris Kramer, John Howard and all the others who volunteered their time and made contributions to this important cause.
FOWP has planted five large trees in three different Winona parks. Each tree measures two-and-a-half to three inches in diameter and is purchased and planted using local vendors. The city of Winona has agreed to water them. Two additional trees have been purchased and will be planted soon. FOWP’s goal is to plant 10 trees this year. Also, in the upcoming month, FOWP would like to treat the existing ash trees by the softball fields in Lake Park.
Contributions make this possible. Buying a replacement tree costs approximately $600. Treating an existing ash tree costs approximately $60 for a two-year period. Our goal is to raise $2,000 for replacement trees and $1,500 for the treatment of existing ash trees.
To donate, please make checks payable to Winona Community Foundation, memo line: trees. Checks can be mailed to or dropped off at 111 River Front, suite 2E, Winona, MN, 55987. A big thank you to Nancy Brown and Mandi Olson of the Winona Community Foundation, who have been of great help to our effort.
I’ll end with a wise proverb. A society grows great when older people plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in. Donate for your children and your children’s children.
