COVID infections at lowest levels since last summer

New COVID infections are down significantly across most of the local area and at the lowest levels since last summer. Two more people died from the virus in the past week (a Winona County resident last Thursday and a Trempealeau County resident last Friday), state health departments reported. They were the 51st and 44th deaths in Winona and Trempealeau counties, respectively.

Fewer local people are getting vaccinated in recent weeks. In the last two weeks, just 523 Winona County residents got their first dose, compared with nearly three times as many in the prior two weeks, according to state data.
