It’s a tour, an activity, a craft, a snack and a curated music playlist — all neatly packaged in a box for you to enjoy with your family and friends. And it’s free.
The Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM) is again offering its free Seasonal Saturdays Event Boxes. The Summer Art Shenanigans Event Box will be available to reserve beginning June 1. Each Event Box includes elements of the popular Seasonal Saturdays program for use at home, and $1 admission for recipients to come visit MMAM at their leisure.
“This Event Box brings a little slice of the Museum into your home, and still offers low-cost admission to come enjoy the amazing collections. Most people are so surprised when they come in and see the great artworks we have right here in Winona,” says Heather Casper, MMAM curator of education.
In addition to the discounted admission, the Summer Art Shenanigans Event Box includes a guided paper tour of the painting that inspired the Event Box, three mini-posters of paintings in the MMAM collection, a special activity to play as a group, an art making activity, a music playlist to accompany the activities, and a small snack.
Seasonal Saturdays (formerly known as Second Saturdays) will be offered quarterly on select Saturdays four times a year, or once each season. This year, however, MMAM committed to creating these Event Boxes for all of 2021 due to planning in the pandemic. MMAM will offer 300 Event Boxes this summer, and another 300 this fall, and then return to in-person Seasonal Saturdays in February of 2022.
“Art is for everyone,” Casper says. “We are committed to making our space accessible to everyone, regardless of economic means, background, or artistic experience. We hope this box can bring a few smiles to people while they use them at home, and we also hope they will provide for a better museum experience once they come visit the galleries.”
The Event Box is best enjoyed by groups of 2-6 people ages 8 and older, but parties of one, and families with young children are welcome to register for a box. There is a one-box limit per household, and supplies are available first come, first serve. To learn more and register for an Event Box, visit MMAM’s website at mmam.org/seasonal-saturdays or call 507-474-6626.
Discounted admission and Event Boxes are made possible by an Arts Access grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, WNB Financial, Winona Foundation, BNSF, Winona Community Fund, Coca-Cola of Winona, and Doug Troke with Farmers Insurance in Winona. The Water Main is the media sponsor for Seasonal Saturdays. MMAM Executive Director Nicole Chamberlain Dupree says, “Seasonal Saturdays sponsors are vital for the success of this program and serving our community in terms of arts access, arts engagement, and arts appreciation.”
Free transportation to and from the Minnesota Marine Art Museum is available through Winona Area Transit Service’s Dial-A-Ride. Call 507-474-6666 to schedule your ride a few days before you plan to visit, and MMAM will pay your fare upon arrival and provide you with return fare.
