Cotter girls track stars headed for state

The Cotter girls track team qualified for state in two events at the section meet in Dodge Center, Minn., at Triton High School last week. The temperature was in the mid-90s, which made it a very challenging week to run (especially distance). Nevertheless, several Cotter athletes are now bound for state after stellar performances. The top two in each event qualified for the state meet next week in St. Michael/Albertville, Minn., on June 17-19. The top six in each event made it to the podium to receive their medals.

The Cotter girls four-by-800-meter relay finished second to qualify for state, with Claire Heiring, Aubrey Williams, Sonja Semling, and Claire Ebertowski. In a wild finish that came down to the wire, Cotter senior Claire Ebertowski passed rival Jacey Majerus, of Lake City, Minn. to take the lead just a few seconds from the finish line. Just a moment later, Kendyl Queensland, of Grand Meadow, Minn., passed both the Cotter and Lake City runners to win the race and knock Lake City all the way down to third and out of state contention.

Heiring, Williams, Semling and Ebertowski finished with a time of 9:53.53 minutes, less than 20 seconds behind first place, and less than a second ahead of Lake City in third.

“It feels amazing to qualify with my friends that I get to train with every day,” Ebertowski said. “I’m so proud of us for achieving our goal. As a senior, going to state in track is very special to me because I haven’t competed since freshmen year!”

Cotter eighth grader Sonja Semling finished second in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:48:51 minutes. “We all pushed through the heat and ended up getting season [personal records] for everyone,” Semling said. “We have trained hard in the hot weather and it really paid off.”

Cotter Head Coach David Jewison said, “I’m extremely excited for the Cotter girls who are going to the state track meet. Sonja ran a wonderfully strategic race to proper her to the state meet in the 3,200-meter.  Today the four-by-800 girls all ran their best 800 of the season to cut nearly 26 seconds off their subsection time. It was an amazing race with three teams battling it out at the finish line.”
