Luther College’s Ryan Ortega, originally of Winona, finished his collegiate tennis career with an appearance in the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis National Tournament held on May 14, 2021, in St. Louis. Ortega and his team qualified for nationals with an undefeated conference season and a championship in the Iowa conference playoff tournament. They also qualified and participated in the last national tournament held in Chicago in 2019. COVID cut the 2020 season very short, but this year’s season and safer COVID protocol gave the team a more normal match schedule. Ortega was a four-year varsity starter on the Luther team lineup and finished his singles career with a 33-12 record and a 55-27 doubles record. Ortega was selected to the ARC All-Conference team twice and appeared as Conference Player of the Week in 2019. In addition, Ortega earned highest academic honors as a student-athlete including induction into the Chi Alpha Sigma Honors fraternity, the ARC All-Academic team, and recognized for four years as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Scholar Athlete. Ortega attended Cotter High School and was Section 1A singles champion in 2015, 2016, and 2017 with three state appearances finishing third place in 2017, and fourth place in 2015 and 2016 and holds the varsity singles wins record. Ortega recently graduated magna cum laude from Luther College with an accounting degree and will be employed at United Health Group in Minneapolis, Minn.
