10:00 am The Winona Hims to Sing on Mother’s Day at Saint P
A great way to start Mother’s Day celebrations this year is to enjoy a family breakfast, listen to The Winona Hims, and enjoy Sunday morning church services. The men’s gospel choir, The Winona Hims, will sing during the 10:00 a.m. Mother’s Day worship service, on Sunday, May 12, at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, Lafayette and Broadway streets, Winona. The Winona Hims, the popular regional Christian singing group, numbering about 35 men from the Winona Area, will offer eight songs as part of the Eucharistic service at the church. Under the direction of founder Bruce Odell, the Hims will provide music intended to lift up and encourage God's people during the approximately one-hour service. St. Paul's faith community always welcomes visitors on Sunday mornings. "We would be particularly happy to have old friends and new visitors join us for this very special Mother's Day service," said Priest-in-Charge Father Lawrence J. Green. Freewill offerings at the service will benefit St. Paul’s parish. Plan to arrive at 9:00 a.m. to enjoy the abundant, family-style breakfast that St. Paul's provides every Sunday in fall, winter and spring. Breakfast is served in the Parish Hall -- main entrance at 265 Lafayette Street; wheelchair accessible entrance from the church parking lot. There is no charge for breakfast, but freewill offerings are gratefully accepted to help defray costs. 7:00 pm China's Hidden Battlefield-film & discussion
Free film screening followed by an informal discussion with writer, scholar and translator An-Wei of Xi'an, China. The 55-min. documentary (in English) recounts An-Wei’s personal campaign during the last decade to introduce a democratic system of self-governance in his home village of An Shang. His efforts to establish a village school as a legacy for his deceased daughter became a flash point between progressive voices for change and the entrenched political system that they threatened. A former government official in the Shaanxi (Province) Foreign Affairs Office, An-Wei has been active in the “sister-state” relationship between Shaanxi and Minnesota since its establishment in 1979. He is president of the Shaanxi Translators Association and has served as an interpreter for a number of American dignitaries.
