SG Danceworkz shares incredible 2019-20 season

SG Danceworkz and Fitness Studio, LLC, under the direction of Sheena Gifford, had a short yet incredible season with its SG Performance Company. The season was halted indefinitely due to COVID-19, but the group’s successes and contribution to the community still deserve all the recognition.

The SG Traveling Performance Company members traveled to Hollywood Dance Vibe (Des Moines, Iowa), Intrigue Dance Intensive (Minneapolis, Minn.), and Celebrity Dance Competition (Rochester, Minn.). At Intrigue Dance Intensive, SG Danceworkz had two numbers selected to perform in the closing show! “If No One Will Listen,” choreographed by Sheena Gifford, was selected to perform as one of the two Judge’s Choice Performances (out of 100+ numbers). “How To Save A Life” was also selected to perform as the First Place Imagination Competition Winner. This number was student choreographed by the members of the 2019-2020 SG Dance Composition Class Program! This number also placed First Place Overall Senior Group at Celebrity! At Celebrity Dance Competition, SG Danceworkz was selected as the Celebrity Studio Spirit Award. Additionally, at all competitions, its numbers received high adjudication awards, placed in several categories, and received additional special Judge’s Awards. SG also had several students who earned scholarships, individual recognition, and placed in improv! The SG Traveling Performance Company was also supposed to travel to Dubuque, Iowa, for Starz Dance Competition, but this has been postponed.

The SG Community Performance Company was busy entertaining the Winona community up until the group was no longer able to! The SG Dancers were seen performing for WarriorThon, Watkins Manor, and Lake Winona Manor.  In 2019, SG participated at Trunk or Treat, Lake Winona Manor Parade, Steamboat Days Parade and the group volunteered at the Trinona by running a water booth and cheering station! The dancers had several additional community performances lined up including additional nursing homes, Miss Winona 2020, and the Winona Health USO Variety Show that have been cancelled due to COVID-19.

All students involved in the SG Performance Company were required to complete at least five hours of community service. On top of the performances for local events, the 2019-2020 SG Performance Company collected over 450 hours of community service.

Their season may have been temporarily halted due to the current situation, but the kids continue to train through ZOOM classes, are staying connected with each other, and plan to showcase the work of the entire studio with a virtual recital in which they are currently preparing for. They also entered several numbers into DX Majestic Virtual Competition, where they brought home First Place Petite Novice Duet/Trio, First Place Teen Advanced Small Group, First Place Teen Advanced Large Group, and First Place Teen Intermediate Production. Additionally, they received several High Gold and Platinum adjudicated awards, including their graduating senior’s solo. Kaitlin Celius (class of 2020) received a Platinum Award for her musical theater solo entitled, “A Sweet Old-Fashioned Girl,” choreographed by Sheena Gifford.

The 2019-2020 SG Performance Company members include Benjamin Barrientos, Karianna Barrientos, Morgan Bedor, Kyra Benson, Risa Borland, Ashley Brommerich, Melanie Butenhoff, Kaitlin Celius, Maddie Cone, Kendal Goyette, Piper Goyette, Delaney Hermsen, Lily Jacques, Vivienne Jacques, Kyana Kuhn, Joselyn Lockington, Marissa McNally, Trinity Merchlewitz, McKenna Meyer, Braelynn Norman, Jaida Oudal, Nellie Pecarina, Aubrey Schossow, Jocelyn Smith, Katie Speltz, Olivia Stark, Emily Swartling, Shelby Tesch, Miranda Thill, Alexis Urbick, and Taylor Wryzca.

SG Danceworkz and Fitness Studio was supposed to hold its fifth anniversary recital, Danceworkz In Motion 2020, at SMU Page Theatre in May, which has been changed to a virtual format to be released later due to COVID-19. SG Danceworkz is currently postponing future registration and Performance Company placements for the 2020-2021 season due to the unknown of the future of the studio with the current pandemic.

SG Danceworkz has been proud to be a part of the Winona community over the past five years. During that time, the SG Danceworkz Performance Company and faculty have provided more than 2,200 community service hours to the Winona community and they hope to be able to continue the tradition of community and excellence in potential future seasons.
